What Is Photography?
Photography is many different things. Anyone who picks up a camera and starts taking photos could technically be classified as a photographer although without experience they would likely be classified as an amateur photographer. Photography is becoming an increasingly popular hobby within schools as well as outside of work and can be found as a taught subject in many schools across the United Kingdom.
When looking at photography overall as a hobby or profession there is a lot of time and effort that goes into it as a variety of different factors can affect the quality of the photographs taken overall. In everyday life photography can be found in many different environments from weddings to nightclubs and also for the news and media agencies. When considering the history of photography it is easy to forget that it all began almost 200 years ago around the Victorian era and there are still some remarkable photos that exist from that time period in good condition today.
What Impact Has Photography Had?
As well as being an important and engaging hobby for many across the world , photography has documented some of the world’s most memorable and notorious events and preserved them for future generations. In a way photography is a way of preserving memories. One of the most remarkable photos of the 20th century is that of the lone man standing in front of tanks as they drove through Tienanmen square. There was a massacre of thousands of people in the square as a result of protests and the military randomly killing civilians.
The photo signified an act of defiance and the Chinese people standing up to their rulers. Without this and other photos there would have been little to no evidence of what the Chinese authorities had done as they moved quickly to purge the internet and media of any information relating to this massacre taking place.
Journalism is an activity that is closely related to photography. Journalism itself is the process of documenting current events and ongoing issues through a variety of different channels. often journalism is conducted first hand with journalists reporting live from events. An example of this is reports from the UK parliament. It is not an uncommon site to see journalists and news reporters gathered outside the houses of parliament reporting on brexit and the latest developments that have come as a result of it. Overall to conclude , both journalism and photography play very important parts in everyday life and they are likely to be around for many generations to come.
